Influenza A(H1N1) Outbreak – May 31, 2009 Update
The World Health Organization informs that 53 countries have officially reported 15,510 cases of influenza A(H1N1) infection, including 99 deaths. The largest numbers of cases are registered in the U.S. (about 8,000), Mexico (about 5,000) and Canada (about 1,100).
The World Health Organization also reports that in view of the threat posed by the current outbreak of new influenza A (H1N1), the Director-General of the World Health Organization convened a High-Level Consultation for all Member States at the start of the Sixty-second World Health Assembly on May 18, 2009. The consultation provided an opportunity for Member States to share experiences, to discuss lessons learnt, and to highlight the challenges that now confront the world community. It is not clear, however whether this consultation will help to contain the outbreak of influenza A(H1N1) infection.
