42nd Annual Meeting of the International Society for Psychoneuroendocrinology
Leo Sher, M.D.
The 42nd Annual Meeting of the International Society for Psychoneuroendocrinology (ISPNE) will be held on September 11-13, 2012, in New York City. This year’s focus is “Molecular and Hormonal Effects of Stress.”
There will be three plenary speakers: Dr. Elizabeth Blackburn, Nobel Laureate, will speak about her groundbreaking work on telomeres (and a study regarding telomers in combat PTSD is also anticipated to be presented). Dr. Florian Holsboer will give the lecture, “Research roadmap for molecular and biological studies of PTSD.” Dr. Charles Nemeroff will present new data on genetic markers for PTSD and their interactions with environmental PTSD risk factors such as childhood adversity. On September 11, Dr. Dennis Charney will speak about resilience. For more information, click here.
The scientific program will be held at the New York Academy of Sciences (NYAS) in Manhattan. NYAS is a state-of-the-art facility, located on the 40th Floor of 7 World Trade Center, featuring breathtaking views of the New York City, one of the most exciting cities in the world.
A special all day symposium entitled “The Use of Biomarkers in the Military: Theory to Practice” will take place on September 14, 2012. This symposium is being organized as a satellite conference of the ISPNE. One of the symposium speakers is Col. Carl A. Castro, M.D., Research Area Director, Military Operational Medicine Research Program, U.S. Department of Defense. The community of investigators interested in Biomarkers is growing and meetings such as this offer an important venue for learning and networking. It is expected that the highlights of this symposium will be published in the European Journal of Psychotraumatology.
Another satellite conference entitled “Sex Differences in Eating and Addiction: What does stress have to do with it?” will be held on September 10, 2012, at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine.
Professor Rachel Yehuda is the current President of the ISPNE. Professor Clemens Kirschbaum in the President-Elect. The ISPNE promotes and disseminates knowledge on hormones, their interactions with brain, and body processes and behavior, as well as their clinical applications.
